The RTO introduced several departmental changes in January of this year that will take effect on April 1st, 2022. Additionally, there were a few new laws that drivers of cars and other vehicles on the road must abide by.
One of the most significant changes was the cost of registering an imported vehicle in the country. The new fee will be Rs. 2,500, while the registration renewal will cost Rs. 10,000.
In addition, the fees for four-wheelers and auto rickshaws will go up by 600 rupees, while the registration fees for two-wheelers will go up by 300 rupees. If a vehicle’s application for renewal is submitted late, a fine of Rs. 300 for two-wheelers and Rs. 500 for four-wheelers will be assessed.
In addition to GST, which represents the revenue from car sales that goes to the centre and state governments. The state government imposes a road tax on registering a new or old car in a state.
In India, the RTO is often computed using the ex-showroom price (except in Chandigarh, Jharkhand, and Gujarat, where the price is calculated before GST).
To compute the road tax, the customer’s discounts are not considered; instead, a flat fee based on the appropriate slab is applied to the ex-showroom price to determine the exact registration cost for new cars.
Registration Fees – No matter how much the car is worth, the registration fees are Rs. 600.
Hypothecation Fees – If a loan is taken out on the vehicle, the revised hypothecation fees are Rs. 1500; in case the car’s cost is paid for in cash, there are no such fees to be applied.
Number Plate – High Security Number Plates are now mandatory in the majority of cities and states. The High Security Number Plate will cost you between Rs 230 and Rs 400.
State Development Charges or Parking Fees – This fee is levied by some states, including the Union Territories. For example, in Delhi, where MCD Parking Fees are required, automobiles selling for less than 4 lakhs ex-showroom price must pay Rs 2000, while those selling for more than 4 lakhs ex-showroom price must pay Rs 4000.
Temporary Registration – Despite the fact that most cities receive a final registration mark, in some places only temporary registration is first completed, followed by permanent registration. Generally, temporary registration fees range from Rs. 1500 to Rs. 2500 (valid for only one month).
Road Tax – Slabs are listed as taxes payable to the state government for registering a new vehicle in a particular state.
FasTag – FasTag costs you around Rs. 500-600 and is due at the time of car purchase along with the security deposit.
