Elizabeth II (1926–2022) became queen of Great Britain and Northern Ireland on 6 February 1952 following the death of her father, King George VI (1895–1952)
Known for her efforts to modernise the institution of monarchy – and for her love of corgis – she celebrated her Platinum Jubilee in 2022 and was the second-longest reigning monarch in history when she died on 8 September 2022.
